An age-old question may have finally been answered… and it looks like dogs were the winners all along.

An international team of researchers has found that canines are actually smarter than their feline counterparts.

The study, published in the science journal Animal Cognition, revealed cats have around 250 million neurons while dogs have more than twice as much, with over 530 million.

Scientists say counting neurons is a great indicator of a brain’s processing power.

A smaller group of researchers at the University of Salford in England have been trying to decode canine body language for years, and they’ve managed to crack what nineteen of their gestures mean -- with ‘scratch me’ being the biggest ask.

So, it looks like your cat wasn’t actually secretly plotting your demise when you weren’t home.

No worries Garfield, we still love you!
