1010 WINS (NEW YORK) -- It's a new day in Hollywood.

Over the past year, the #MeToo movement has put a spotlight on sexual assault and harassment that had otherwise gone unnoticed. The inclusion rider clause, which ensures greater diversity in casts and crews, has now been openly adopted by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck following Frances McDormand's Best Actress Oscar acceptance speech. And now, CBS has broken ground with their new series "Instinct."

Lead by actor Alan Cumming and Executive producer Michael Rauch, "Instinct" is the first hour-long network drama with a gay lead character.

1010 WINS reporter Rebecca Granet asked Cumming, who was joined by Rauch and GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis Wednesday night at special screening of the premiere episode, the significance of that role.

"I think it's hugely significant," Cumming said.

"It feels like a really amazing but also a really terrible thing that it has taken this long for for that to be," Cumming added. "When you think of the amount of output that American networks have produced, and this is the first time in 2018, it's sort of a bitter sweet thing for me actually. But I am, very, very excited that I am playing that character."

But despite the trailblazing nature of the character, Cumming says he doesn't want this show to be defined by it.

"It's a character whose gayness is like the fourth or fifth most interesting thing about him, or notable thing about him. Mostly, especially on networks, if there is a LGBT character their sexuality is very, very much the focus of the storyline and I think we've got to get to a stage where that is not the case anymore."

Based on the James Patterson novel, the series follows Dylan Reinhart, a former CIA operative turned university professor who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer. Compelled by the case, Reinhart comes out of retirement to help detective Lizzie Needham catch the suspect who is using Dylan’s first book as a tutorial.

"It was the type of project that felt like it was time both for CBS to be able to diversify their cast," Rauch said."

"It was time to have a broadcast hour long with a gay lead. And I think they just also really got into the creative ideas that we all had."

Instinct airs Sunday nights at 8pm on CBS.
