Young people around the world skipping school to demonstrate for climate change action

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Young people around the world are skipping school today in an attempt to focus attention on climate concerns.

The Youth Climate Strike website speaks of support for the “Green New Deal,” an end to fossil fuel infrastructure projects and a national emergency declaration on climate change.

Demonstrations are taking place in the city in Washington Square Park, Columbus Circle, and on the steps of City Hall.

At least 100 students walked out of Bronx Science, with signs reading, "Change politics, not our climate," and "There is no planet B."

"The main goal that I want to get out of this today is to raise awareness and promote action," said one student participating.

The movement began last August when a teenager in Sweden cut class on Fridays to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament.
