WEST SAYVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – Good Samaritans jumped into action and rescued a dog from the frigid waters off Long Island this weekend.

Suffolk County police and a couple of strangers got into the chilly water to save a hound mix named Wilbur who was struggling in the Great South Bay.

The dog was clinging on to debris when they saw him Saturday morning, police said.

It appears Wilbur wandered from his West Sayville yard and somehow wound up in the Great South Bay.

He was warmed up with towels and transported to an animal hospital.

He was eventually reunited with his owner and is expected to make a full recovery.
