Neighborhood Group Asks State To Keep Men's Shelter Out Of Midtown Hotel

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Some people who live on West 58th Street have filed a lawsuit to stop a homeless shleter from opening on their block.

They claim it's due in part to concern about the safety of the people who would be living in that shelter.

The group calls itself the West 58th Coalition and they want the state supreme court to stop the city from converting the old Park Savoy Hotel into a men's shelter.

They say it would be a threat to the neighborhood as well as a fire trap for those who live in the building.

"I'm not opposed to shleters, we need to take care of people, but this is the wrong facility for this situation," Rob said.

Rob added that he's not against a facility for families.

There was no comment from the city which has yet to see the suit.
