NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A would-be car thief learned the hard way Tuesday morning not to mess with one Bronx mother.

The woman, who was preparing to take her son to school, auto-started her car from her apartment on Brook Avenue in Melrose. She then proceeded to go outside and she found something startling: A man sitting in the driver's seat, fiddling with the ignition in attempt to zoom off, police said.

But that didn't happen.

The woman, 49-year-old Tihisha Jones, opened the passenger door but he shut it on her. She then opened the driver's side door, pulled him out of the car, threw him to the ground and started attacking him.

Video captured the aftermath: (Warning: the video includes graphic language)

The man was identified Bernardo Santiago. 19, of the Bronx. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Santiago was charged with attempted grand larceny and criminal stolen possession of stolen property.

Jones told NBC4 that "he's lucky I didn't kill him."

"Just last week they broke my window," she said. "So I guess he got a whoopin' for the old and the new."
