WALLKILL, NY (1010 WINS) -- Santa Claus is coming to town, but the jolly old elf's arrival will be preceded by the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

The tree was cut down Thursday, in upstate Wallkill.

A crane hoisted the 12 ton Norway spruce up and onto a flatbed truck for the trip to Midtown.

"About 4 or 5 years ago I was driving over there on Route 32, and when I came up here on the top of the hill there was a beautiful tree," Eric Pauze said.

The 72 ft beauty was in Shirley Figueroa and Lissette Gutierrez's backyard.

"Last year I tried to do a laser light, but it didn't go that high," Figueroa said.

"The laser lights, we could only get them to focuse like halfway up," Gutierrez added.

The folks at Rockefeller Center shouldn't have that problem with 50,000 lights and 5 miles of wire.

The tree will go up on Saturday, but the lights won't be turned on until November 28.
