NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- As Americans across the country commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. day, New Yorkers spent the day filling food containers for the needy.

This day has also become a day of service for many, and volunteers spent hours at the Food Bank for NYC on West 116th Street Monday for "food packing day."

1010 WINS' Juliet Papa talked to a few volunteers who filled containers with goodies including chickpea salad, pasta, meatballs and grilled veggies.

Tom Goldstone was helping fill containers along with his wife and two kids. "It's become a family tradition to come on days of service and serve our fellow New Yorkers," Goldstone told Papa.

Volunteers will put together some 1,500 care packages for the needy, Papa reported. On Tuesday, they're setting up at the Barclays Center to distibute meals and services for furloughed federal workers in need.
