Video: Rikers inmates attack guards 3 times in less than a week

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Correction officers on Rikers Island were attacked in multiple incidents over the past week, videos show.

Two of the incidents happened on Wednesday, according to the New York Post.

In the first, an inmate walked up to a guard and slugged him in the face a couple of times before running off.

In the second, a different inmate charged at an officer, pinned him to a wall, punched and then tried to choke him. The guard managed to fight his way free.

Another guard was targeted in a third incident Friday morning, according to the Daily News. In that attack, an inmate tried to punch an officer but the officer managed to duck in time and take the inmate down.

None of the guards were seriously injured in the three attacks.

Correction officials praised the guards’ restraint, but the correction officers' union says the attacks point to a serious problem.

Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen tells the Post that city criminal justice reforms have led to inmates having no fear of consequences for assaulting officers. He says it has led to a culture of violence against the officers.

1010 WINS has asked the city and the union for comment, but there’s been no response as of Sunday.
