NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man desecrated and destroyed religious statues at a Catholic church in Williamsburg over the weekend, and police say they’re investigating the incident as a hate crime.

The NYPD released surveillance video Monday of the repugnant act outside Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church on Metropolitan Avenue.

Police say the man first urinated on the angel statues early Sunday morning.

But he took it a step further after that, police say, grabbing the figures and tossing them to the ground.

Video shows the statues shattering as they hit the pavement.

Police said they believe the man is about 30 years old and was wearing a pea coat, beige slacks and Vann brand sneakers.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
