JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Six people were arrested by police officers who used pepper spray and batons after a brawl broke out on a street in Jersey City, according to a report.

The fight, which escalated into a melee involving around 100 people, broke out on Bostwick Avenue on Tuesday evening, reported

Video taken by a bystander shows police officers hitting people with batons and using pepper spray to break up the fight.

At a news conference after the fight, Jersey City Public Safety Director Jim Shea said six police officers responded to the scene, adding that the altercation initially involved two groups totaling around 20 people.

The situation escalated after a boy “pulled at (an) officer’s duty belt and appeared to try to take the officer’s weapon,” the outlet reported.

Jersey City Councilman at-large Rolando Lavarro on Wednesday called the video “deeply concerning on so many levels, and even more so given our current state of emergency with the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the outlet.

Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said he felt the officers “acted with great restraint and used exactly the force necessary to bring this situation to a close,” the outlet reported.
