NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The US Navy Hospital ship, USNS Comfort, will depart New York City on April 30, ABC-7 reports.

On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the president the city no longer needed it.

Currently, the ship is working to transfer or discharge the remaining 39 patients on board before its return to its home port in Norfolk, Virginia, according to CNN

"I’ve asked Andrew if we could bring the Comfort back to its base in Virginia so that we could have it for other locations, and he said we would be able to do that,” Trump said. “We’ll be bringing the ship back at the earliest time, and we’ll get it ready for its next mission which I’m sure will be a very important one."

The hospital ship was deployed to New York City on March 30 to help with surging coronavirus cases.

The Javits Center field hospital will close on May 30, a FEMA official confirms.

President Donald Trump said last week that the lack of patients on the ship showed that New York City was healing. "They didn’t need it, that’s a good thing. That’s such a good thing. I think that shows that New York’s making progress," he said.
