NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An upstate New York memorial dedicated to 9/11 first responders was vandalized this week with spray paint, leaving locals wondering why someone would desecrate such a monument.

The spray paint has been removed from the memorial -- located in Geneva, about 50 miles west of Syracuse -- but the suspect or suspects remain at-large.

Spray paint was scrawled over the granite memorial, including an engraving of "God Bless America."

Assistant City Manager Adam Blowers said, "To see something like that is really tough because you know those people. You see those people everyone day: the firefighters, the police officers, EMTs all those first responders, and to have the work that they do be treated that way is sort of unfortunate."
