NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- State police say a preliminary investigation shows excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash that killed 2 off-duty NYPD officers - one on his wedding day.

Officers 39-year-old John Martinez of Hauppage, and 31-year-old Michael Colangelo of Huntington Station, were celebrating after Colangelo's wedding at a Catskills resort Sunday night when their vehicle veered off a road in Ulster County and crashed into a tree.

Martinez was driving the car when it went off the road and crashed. They were leaving the wedding at the Full Moon Resort in the Catskills.

Colangelo was an ESU K9 officer who worked in Brooklyn.

It's not clear how fast the car was going when it went off the road. State police say it appears they were not wearing seatbelts.

The bride was not in the car at the time.

Authorities said a third person in the back seat of the Maserati was wearing a seatbelt and was treated at a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

State police are investigating.
