Trump expected to back down on census citizenship question

July 11, 2019 - 3:01 pm

WASHINGTON (1010 WINS) -- President Donald Trump is expected to announce at a press conference Thursday afternoon that he will stop his attempts to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census and instead have the Commerce Department obtain data in other ways, sources told NBC News and ABC News

The decision is a turn-around for Trump, last week said that he was "very seriously" considering an executive order to try to force the citizenship question's inclusion, despite the fact that the government has already begun the lengthy and expensive process of printing the census questionnaire without it.

Critics say that including a citizenship question for the first time since 1950 will discourage participation in the census, not only by those living in the country illegally but also by citizens who fear that participating will expose noncitizen family members to repercussions.
