NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- President Trump announced Thursday night that the MTA will receive an additional $298 million -- last week he said the agency was receiving $500 million -- as part of the $3.9 billion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"Another $298M heading to @MTA, adding up to over $2B in federal funding from @USDOT so far, part of the $3.9B total from the CARES Act," Trump tweeted. "This is critical to keeping essential personnel moving and aiding metro NYC in recovery. We are here for the people of New York!"

The federal funds are being granted to the MTA to help it deal with revenue lost from plummeting ridership over the coronavirus outbreak. The transit agency is also spending hundreds of millions of dollars disinfecting subway trains and stations.

Last Thursday, Trump announced on Twitter, "I am proud to announce the first $500M of $3.9B in CARES Act transit funding headed to the NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Important funding to keep transit systems clean and operating to get people back to work! Spend it wisely! @NYGovCuomo @NYCMayor."

The CARES Act was signed by Trump on March 27. It includes public health spending to confront the COVID-19 pandemic, cash relief for individual citizens, a broad lending program for small business and targeted relief for hard-hit industries.

Last Friday, Trump announced that NJ Transit will receive $1.4 billion via the CARES Act.

"I am proud to announce that @NJTransit will receive $1.4B in CARES Act funding to assist in their continued operations and to keep people moving in the NY/NJ area! The LARGEST single Federal transit grant to New Jersey Transit ever. Together, we will prevail!" Trump tweeted.
