NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD was forced to calm the nerves of uneasy New Yorkers and tourists Tuesday night, who mistook a motorcycle backfiring in Times Square for an active shooter.

EMS says the panic caused 9 people to be evaluated and 6 to be hospitalized.

"There is no #ActiveShooter in #TimesSquare," NYPD Midtown North tweeted at 10:09 p.m. "Motorcycles backfiring while passing through sounded like gun shots. We are recieving multiple 911 calls. Please don’t panic. The Times Square area is very safe!"

One man, whose wife broke her wrist in the panic said, "She was just knocked over. People proceeded to just trample over her."

Social media lit up with people in Times Square sharing photos of the brief chaos and expressing concern over the sounds they heard.
