RUTHERFORD, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Five people including one child were killed in a crash on Route 3 late Sunday, officials said.

According to Rutherford Police Chief John Russo, an SUV crashed into the rear of a front-end loader that was used at a construction project on the westbound highway around 11 p.m.

Russo noted there was only one westbound lane open at the time of the crash.

A man, three women and a young boy were all apparently riding in the SUV at the time of the accident.

Four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fifth victim, a child, died en route to Hackensack University Medical Center, according to officials.

Russo confirmed the child was about two to three-years-old.

PIX 11 reports that some of the passengers of the SUV were ejected onto the highway in the crash.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigations Unit along with Rutherford and New Jersey State Police and the Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification are investigating the accident.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims.

Westbound Route 3 was to remain closed until a lengthy, extensive investigation was completed and traffic was being diverted to northbound Route 17.
