NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- After the flag, the greatest symbol of our freedom is probably the Statue of Liberty.

As a pillar of freedom, the statue has attracted visitors for decades and now the foundation for the statue and Ellis Island have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for the completion of a new museum.

The project began over a year ago but needs to raise $50,000 to complete the project.

The For Lady Liberty campaign on Indeigogo has already raised just over $31,000 and is suggesting each visitor donate $18.86. The statue was officially unveiled on Oct. 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Foundation's Director of Public Affairs Suzanne Mannion says the new museum will be an impressive 26,000 square feet and provide a home for Lady Liberty’s story.

“More visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the statue’s history, experience the artifacts and of course, see the original torch which will be housed in the new museum,” Mannion said.

The museum is expected to open in May 2019.
