Staten Island wins Game 1 of Little League World Series
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- So far, so good.
The Mid-Island Little League from Staten Island beat Des Moines 5-2 Thursday in Game 1 of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The next game is Sunday.
The team became World Series-bound on Sunday, after its 4-0 win over Berlin, Maryland.
This marks the Mid-Island Little League's first game in the Little League World Series Thursday.
"Our job is not to get here," coach Joe Calabrese told 1010 WINS. "We had a plan when this all started. And our goal is to get here and win the World Series. So, we are here now and we understand that we are not done yet. And we just keep putting that in their head. And they are focused and ready to go."
Calabrese dedicated this season to his late brother John, who died in 2014 at the age of 45 when he had a heart attack while working out.
John's son, John Jr., plays on the team.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to offset the team's travel expenses while on the road.
