NYPD urges shoppers to 'avoid area' near Queens Center following 'large disturbance' involving 200 youths

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD urged shoppers Friday afternoon to "please avoid the area" surrounding the Queens Center shopping mall in Elmhurst following a "large disturbance" consisting of about 200 youths gathering at the mall. 

One person was taken into policy custody, two were taken to a hospital and two others were injured but declined medical attention.

"We have a large disturbance at @Queens_Center Mall," the 110th Precinct tweeted. at 2:23 p.m. "Half-day for our schools has brought a large # of youths to the mall and some are acting disorderly. Officers and Mall staff are acting quickly to restore normal conditions.  For now please stay out of the area."

Forty minutes later, the disturbance had subsided, but shoppers were asked to avoid the area. 

"I want to update the public on @Queens_Center condition, the mall is open and inside is clear," read a tweet posted at 3:03 p.m. "We are still working on clearing the crowd from the surrounding area, just to be safe, please avoid the area and help us #SEESOMETHINGSAYSOMETHING." 

About another 40 minutes later, the 110th Precinct gave the area the all-clear, tweeting, "The surrounding area is back to normal conditions. Extra patrol will remain in the area for uniform presence #SEESOMETHINGSAYSOMETHING." 

No injuries were reported.
