Shoppers Head To Toys R Us For One Last Trip Down Its Aisles

June 29, 2018 - 11:59 am

It's the end of an era.

All remaining Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in the U.S. will close on Friday.

The retailer filed for Chapter 11 reorganization last fall.  In January, it announced plans to close about 180 stores, but then in March it said it would liquidate the rest of the 700-plus stores.

While the shelves are nearly bare at most locations, what's left of the iconic retailer's inventory has been marked down up to 80 percent.

And while it appears to be the end of the toy store chain, some retail experts believe that a potential buyer could bring it back to life. Toys R Us and Babies R Us will continue to operate in Canada, though, where the owners are different.

At the Toys R Us in Paramus, New Jersey, shoppers were nostalgic about the store.

"I've waited online overnight, Christmas season, last year, the year before, for the hot toys you can't find anywhwere. The employees were wonderful," a woman told 1010WINS' Glenn Shuck.

Echoed another woman perusing the aisles, "It's sad, times are changing."
