Senate Confirms Pompeo To Replace Tillerson As Secretary of State

April 26, 2018 - 1:14 pm

WASHINGTON (1010 WINS) -- CIA Director Mike Pompeo has a new job. The Senate confirmed him with a 57 to 42 vote on Thursday, to serve as the next Secretary of State.

Pompeo will replace Rex Tillerson who left last month.

Most Senate Democrats opposed Pompeo, citing his hawkish policy positions and controversial statements about minority groups.

Republicans said his closeness with President Donald Trump will have a positive influence on foreign policy decisions.

Thursday's vote means Pompeo can attend Friday's meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Belgium.
