Schumer: Judge who overturned Obamacare ‘off the deep end’

December 16, 2018 - 3:02 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – At a press conference Sunday, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer blasted the Texas federal judge who ruled Obamacare unconstitutional, and the senator vowed to fight back.

“The judge seemed way off the deep end,” the senator said.

He said the decision could be devastating.

“Can you imagine a parent’s little girl, little boy, has cancer and the insurance company says, ‘You’re out?’”

Schumer is now calling on fellow senators from both parties to intervene after Friday’s decision by Judge Reed O’Connor.

O’Connor said the landmark health law couldn’t stand without the individual mandate, which the Republican-controlled Congress killed last year.

“The judged used what is called legislative intent, what the Legislature was thinking, so we’ll have real say in this case,” Schumer said.

Meanwhile, senior White House aid Stephen Miller told CBS’ Face the Nation that Congress should be working on an Obamacare replacement.

“This president, working with members of  both parties, would be able to replace it with something that not only expands choice, expands competition, but also protects preexisting conditions in a much better way than the current law does,” Miller said.
