NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Supporters of beleaguered New York City Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr. are planning a rally in front of his Bronx office just before noon on Thursday.

Diaz has been beset by calls for his resignation after he refused to apologize for incendiary comments he made over a week ago, when he claimed on a Spanish-language radio show that the City Council is "controlled by the homosexual community."

The show of support for Diaz is being orchestrated by Antonio Cabrera, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers and Rev. Ruben Diaz’s support committee. He described Diaz as “an honest man of integrity that has worked with the community and for the community.”

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said on Monday that after declining to issue an apology, Diaz should resign, "It's not up to me, but I think what he said is totally unacceptable.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio said, "He could do the right thing now and apologize and that could change the situation. But if he refuses to do it, he should leave."

Diaz has so far refused to apology, tweeting, “What’s homophobic about  saying that the gay community controls the nyc city council ?  I’m giving them credit for the power and influence they have.”

These aren’t the first controversial comments Diaz has made about the LGBTQ community. In 2009, on NY1, regarding whether being gay was an option, he said in Spanish, "It's like having sex with animals. A lot of people want that, too.”
