Rikers Island Correction Officer Slashed In Face During Prison Fight

July 15, 2018 - 2:30 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The investigation continues into a Friday night inmate attack on a correction officer at the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers Island.

President of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association Elias Husamudeen says the attack began when the officer attempted to restore peace.

“The officer was breaking up a fight between some inmates and things, of course, turned the other way and he ended up getting cut in the face, with a 3-inch cut across the face,” Husamudeen explained.

He said the injury was not too serious and that the officer will recover.

The inmate responsible is now in punitive segregation.

The corrections department noted that slashings and stabbings were down 42 percent from January to May of 2018 compare to the same time last year.
