NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New Yorkers can’t wait for their state to legalize recreational marijuana, so they’re heading up to Massachusetts, where they can satisfy their ganja desires the legal way.

Legalization was dropped from the New York state budget, and it’s unclear if it will be taken up by lawmakers again this year.

Meanwhile, thousands of New York stoners have been taking their business elsewhere – Massachusetts, that is, where pot shops started opening late last year.

“I’d say we get dozens, if not hundreds, a day from the greater New York City area,’’ Brandon Pollock, the CEO of Theory Wellness in Great Barrington, told the New York Post.

Pollock estimates that half the customers at his dispensary come from the Empire State, and the Post reports that two-thirds of the vehicles in the shop’s parking lot were from New York.

The dispensary has sold to about 15,000 New Yorkers since opening in January, according to sales records, the Post reports.

“This is a lot nicer than what I’m used to — having my dealer come over with a plastic bag,” a stock trader from Manhattan told the Post.

A man and woman in their 20s said they go up to a dispensary north of Theory every other week.

They said they're especially careful crossing the border back into New York.
