Report: Joe Biden considers Stacey Abrams as 2020 running mate

March 21, 2019 - 10:07 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Joe Biden’s advisers are reportedly debating making Stacey Abrams his running mate.

A source told Axios that the 45-year-old Abrams could bring diversity and excitement to the 76-year-old's ticket, showing he “isn’t just another old white guy.”

But some advisers are opposed to the idea, Axios reports. They fear the former vice president may be questioned about why he didn't choose from the large field of Democratic presidential candidates.

The source told Axios the advisers are also aware the move could be seen as a gimmick.

Biden met with Abrams last week in Washington to discuss her political future – a meeting he requested, according to the AP.

Abrams' spokesperson responded to the report Thursday, writing: "Abrams continues to keep all options on the table for 2020 and beyond. She has met with over half a dozen presidential contenders to discuss their commitment to voting rights and to investing in Georgia."

Abrams lost her bid for Georgia governor but delivered a well-received Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address in January.

Biden hasn’t officially said he’s running for president and Axios reports that his position on the idea of Abrams as his vice president is unknown. His office wouldn’t comment for the story.
