Report: De Blasio seriously considering 2020 run for president

February 12, 2019 - 9:11 am

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Mayor Bill de Blasio is giving hints that he may throw his hat into the ring in the 2020 presidential race, and some current and former aides are saying there's a significant chance it could happen.

An adviser to the mayor told CNN he’s considering a run for president. The adviser said de Blasio has been talking about the potential run with people close to him.

A former aide also told CNN that de Blasio is seriously considering a run, and a New York-based operative told the network they believe the mayor will join the 2020 race.

De Blasio is traveling to the early-voting state of New Hampshire later this week after speaking at Harvard College’s Kennedy School last Thursday.

When he was on CNN’s “State of the Union” last month, de Blasio talked about his plan to bring health care to everyone in New York City and said he’d be touring the country to promote progressive politics and move the Democratic Party further to the left.

When asked by host Jake Tapper if he was considering a run for president, the mayor said, "I never rule things out."

The field of Democratic presidential contenders has been steadily growing, with Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand among more than a half-dozen candidates who are running.
