Report: 2nd Parkland shooting survivor dies by suicide in a week

March 24, 2019 - 1:26 pm

CORAL SPRINGS, Fl. (1010 WINS) – Police confirmed a heartbreaking report Sunday: a survivor of the Parkland school shooting in Florida has taken his own life days after another student did the same.

Investigators told the Miami Herald that he was a current student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. They say he died in an “apparent suicide” Saturday night.

A police spokesman told the paper he was a juvenile, while other sources say he was a sophomore.

The tragic death comes a week after a recent graduate of the school, 19-year-old Sydney Aiello, took her own life March 17 after being diagnosed with PTSD. The medical examiner told NBC she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina Petty was one of the 17 people killed in the shooting on Valentine’s Day last year, told the Miami Herald that the male student also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Petty has partnered with Columbia University in a suicide prevention group called the WalkUp Foundation.

If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.
