NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Rep. Peter King on Thursday blasted fellow Republican Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for suggesting that states hit hardest by coronavirus should have to declare bankruptcy, calling McConnell’s remarks “absolutely disgraceful” in an interview with 1010 WINS.

McConnell on Wednesday said he would “certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route” instead of receiving federal aid. His office reportedly released a transcript of his remarks soon after that included a section entitled “On Stopping Blue State Bailouts.”

Speaking with 1010 WINS’ Lee Harris Thursday morning, King — a Republican congressman who represents parts of Long Island — said aid for the states “has nothing to do with being a blue or red state.”

“The fact is, on Long Island alone, we have had more than 50,000 positive cases. We’ve had more than 2,500 people who are dead. How that becomes a blue state, a red state issue is absolutely absurd,” he said.

“This is Mitch McConnell playing to his base — the anti-New York crowd, down, down south. And it’s wrong, and he should be ashamed of himself. It’s indefensible,” he said.

“It’s like Marie Antoinette, you know, let them eat cake,” he added. “Think of all the aid to those southern states over the years, what we’ve done for them. And for him to retaliate like this is absolutely disgraceful.”

Currently, cities and local governments can declare bankruptcy, but states cannot — a policy McConnell said he felt should change.

King on Thursday said he believed the U.S. House of Representatives would vote “overwhelmingly” to approve a second round of aid for states that has already been approved by the Senate.

“We have to stand together as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and just tell Mitch McConnell, ‘We have to do this,’” he said. “This is a matter of life and death.”

“You can’t have governments like New York State, New York City, Nassau County, Suffolk County going bankrupt to something over which we have absolutely no control,” he added. “Real Americans come together, and that’s what Mitch McConnell should do now rather than take political cheap shots to appeal to his base down in Kentucky.”

In his own statement on Twitter Thursday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called McConnell’s bankruptcy suggestion “one of the really dumb ideas of all time.”

“His suggestion to let states go bankrupt makes no sense,” Cuomo wrote. “15,000 people died — this is not the time for politics.”
