Rep. Carolyn Maloney Joins Gun Control Advocates To Demand CDC Research On Shootings

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gun control advocates and elected leaders in the city are speaking about gun violence as a public health threat.

Emergency room doctor Christine Haynes said she and her colleagues are limited in what they can do to prevent gun violence without help from the government.

"So it's frustrating as a physician to see the limited research in how we can prevent this disease, this public health crisis," she said.

She joined activists and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney in a press conference scheduled before the Santa Fe school shooting to call on Congress to fully reverse the Dickey Amendment which prevents the Centers For Disease Control from researching gun violence.

"We study food safety, we study car safety, why in the world would we not study ways to make guns safer?" Maloney said.
