NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- Competitive eater Joey "Jaws" Chestnut remains the reigning champ of Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest for 12th time.

Chestnut scarfed down 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes on the Coney Island boardwalk..

The California native faced off against 17 opponents to defend last year's record of 74 wieners and buns in 10 minutes.

Chestnut's plan was to "find a rhythm and do what it takes'' to win.

Miki Sudo, of Las Vegas, won her sixth consecutive title.

She ate 31 hot dogs in 10 minutes but wasn't able to beat her record of 37 franks from last year.

Thousands gather to watch the spectacle every year, with millions more tuning in on television.
