NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — President Donald Trump has an answer for Americans wondering when they will emerge from self-isolation, resume some semblance of a normal life and witness a restart of the U.S. economy.

"I'd love to have it open by Easter, OK? I would love to have it open by Easter (April 12). I will tell you that right now," Trump said during a virtual town hall event on Fox News Tuesday.

He added, "I would love to have that — it's such an important day for other reasons, but I'll make it an important day for this, too. I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter."

Those may be encouraging words, but most medical experts say social distancing needs to be stepped up -- not relaxed, in order to slow the spread of infections.

Trump's comments also come more than a week into a 15-day initiative by the White House and CDC to get Americans to scale back their social activities.

"We’ll give it some more time if we need a little more time, but we need to open this country up,” he said. "We have to go back to work, much sooner than people thought."

Trump also added that there will be “suicides by the thousands" if businesses don’t get to work sooner rather than later.

The White House is also encouraging lawmakers on Capitol Hill to pass a roughly $2 trillion stimulus package in order to ease the financial pain for Americans and hard-hit industries.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump took to Twitter, writing, “Our people want to return to work,” the president tweeted. “They will practice Social Distancing and all else, and Seniors will be watched over protectively & lovingly. We can do two things together. THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE (by far) THAN THE PROBLEM!”
