What Is Causing the Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak That Has Left More Than 125 People Sick?

    Social distancing may curb the spread of coronavirus, but it doesn’t prevent the rise of Salmonella cases.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a new Salmonella outbreak that has resulted in at least 125 illnesses across 15 states including Oregon, Utah, Montana, Michigan, and Wyoming.

    According to the CDC website, there have been 24 hospitalizations so far but no deaths.

    The first illness began on June 19, 2020, though health officials have yet to identify the source of the outbreak.

    For this reason, the “CDC is not recommending that consumers avoid any particular food at this time. Restaurants and retailers are not advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”

    Those who have been affected range from just two years old to 92. Children under five and adults over 65 are at a higher risk for contracting the illness.

    In previous years, Salmonella outbreaks have been linked to ground beef and turkey, raw chicken products, pre-cut melon, raw sprouts, papaya, and more, according to Forbes.

    Symptoms associated with Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after exposure.

    The CDC notes that most are not super serious and usually last 4 to 7 days with most people recovering without treatment. Some cases become more severe and require hospitalizations.

    On the plus side, many of the things you are already doing to prevent the spread of COVID are also beneficial in preventing Salmonella. Proper hygiene is important including washing your hands and surface often and cleaning your fruits and vegetables before eating.

    You should also take proper care of your food by separating items that won’t be cooked before eaten from raw meats, cooking your meats to a high temperature, and refrigerating perishables.

    Last month, bagged salads from Aldi, Jewel, Walmart, and Hy-Vee were recalled after being linked to a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora.
