NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A new poll from Quinnipiac University shows the Mets are still playing second fiddle to the Yankees among New York City baseball fans.

The Mets are off to a quick start this season, with a 5-1 record, while the Yankees have won just two of their first six games.

But New Yorkers generally aren’t fair weather fans.

“Even though (the Yankees) are having a rough start to the season -- they’re racking up injuries -- New Yorkers aren’t losing heart,” said Quinnipiac polling analyst Mary Snow.

The poll shows 49 percent of New Yorkers root for the Yankees, while 33 percent say the Mets are their favorite team.

Coming in third place among city baseball fans was the Red Sox. Just 3 percent of New Yorkers say the Sox are their favorite; among them is Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The Bronx Bombers have been number one in every poll since 2007, according to Quinnipiac.

“The Yankees are number one in the hearts of New Yorkers,” Snow said.

Among the boroughs, 54 percent of Brooklyn baseball fans rooted for the Yankees, while 63 percent of Bronx fans did so. The Mets found support from 32 percent of fans in Brooklyn and 19 percent of fans in the Bronx, according to Quinnipiac.

The Mets naturally got a boost in their home borough of Queens, where they lead the Yankees among baseball fans, 47-32.

According to Quinnipiac, 42 percent of New York City adults are “very interested” or “somewhat interested” in the MLB.
