NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Queens man was charged with depraved murder Tuesday in the death of a 3-year-old girl who was found unconscious and unresponsive in her family's apartment Monday evening.

Queens DA Richard Brown said Marc Jenkins, 32, of Rockaway Park is presently awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on a second-degree depraved murder and first-degree depraved assault charge in the death of Bella Edwards. If convicted, Jenkins faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

Little Bella's body showed signs of trauma and abuse when she was found by EMS and police on Monday night, Al Jones reported.

A neighbor could not believe it.

"No way, impossible that they could abuse that little girl. It wasn't them, that's for sure," Michelle said.

Her stepfather called 911 and was performing CPR on Bella but she could not be saved.

She was rushed to St. John's hospital around 6:15 p.m. and died a short time later.

"We will make every effort to get to the bottom of what happened there. I can tell you that we have made sure the other child in the home is safe," ACS Director David Hansell said.

Her mother, Shamica Gonzalez, posted to Facebook that 'this feels like a bad dream' and apologized to her daughter for not being there to protect her.

"Bella I'm so sorry I wasn't there to protect you. This feels like a bad dream I cant wake up from. You was loved by everyone and shared so many funny memories. I'm going to miss all the times you kissed and hugged me everyday and miss hearing you say Hi Loggy I'm your big sister. Please watch over me, Logan and the family. We all love you so much!" she wrote.

Bella had another sibling who was about 3 to 4-months-old. That child was unharmed.

A Wednesday night vigil has been planned outside the child's home.
