P.S. 199 Gets Additional Police Presence Amid Diversity Controversy; Report

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- You might have heard about P.S. 199 on the Upper West Side -- some very well to do people send their kids there -- and some of the parents are unenthusiastic about efforts to make the school more diverse.

Now, it's a police matter.

The DOE insists that security has been added over a threat to one individual parent. However, the Daily News reports it's a precaution following a board meeting where parents openly complained about having to bring more minority students into the classrooms.

At that meeting administrators said they were embarassed by the behavior of some of the parents.

"And to compare these students, and say 'my already advantaged kid needs more advantage, they need to be kept away from those kids.' Is tremendously offensive to me," Middle School 245 Principal Henry Zymeck said.

The principal's letter sent home to parents said security has been added due to recent publicity regarding the community.
