NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD officer shot a man in the Bronx Thursday afternoon, making it the third police-involved shooting of the week.

The man was transported to Montefiore Medical Center, where he reportedly died.

"There has been a police involved shooting in the area of East 211 Street and Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx," the NYPD tweeted. "Please avoid the area. Expect emergency vehicles and traffic in the area."

It all started with a traffic stop around 3 p.m. After the stop, officers suspected there were narcotics in the car.

With the front doors of the stopped vehicle still open, the driver tried to pull off from the scene, with his passenger inside.  That led to a struggle between a sergeant and the driver, ending with the sergeant opening fire.

The driver was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital.

The passenger is in police custody.

The sergeant involved was treated at the scene for minor scrapes related to the struggle.
