NEW YORK (1010 WINS) —The streets are crowded with Uber and Lyft drivers these days and many of them have become the target of thieves.

Police say some 40 for-hire drivers have been ripped off since April in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.

They tell the drivers they need to change their destinations, but their phones aren’t working, and then ask to use the driver’s phone.

After taking the driver’s phone, they transfer money out of the driver’s account.
