PORT RICHEY, Fl. (1010 WINS) – The mayor of Port Richey, Florida, was arrested on attempted homicide charges for allegedly opening fire on two deputies when they tried to serve a warrant at his home, according to reports.

Investigators say Mayor Dale Massad fired two shots at a SWAT team early Thursday morning, but police didn’t return fire and no one was hurt.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco says Massad, 68, is "lucky he's not dead."

“He shot rounds at us. That's why we had so many members of our SWAT team out there, we knew it was going to be a very dangerous situation,” Nocco said.

According to CBS affiliate WTSP, Nocco said Massad was a “known drug user” and “drug dealer.”

"The suspect made statements he does not want to go back to jail. The suspect has a previous history of violence. That's what we were dealing with today,” Nocco said.

Massad was being investigated for practicing medicine without a license, which he lost more than 25 years ago.
