Police: Duo breaks into Queens church, steals money for poor

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are searching for a man and woman who they say broke into a Queens church and stole hundreds of dollars from donation boxes.

The duo broke into Saint Helens Roman Catholic Church on 83rd Street in Howard Beach by forcing open the front door early Thursday morning, according to the NYPD.

They allegedly knocked over four poor boxes and made off with about $400.

Parishioners said it was sad people would steal money for the poor.

“This time and age, with what people are doing, it’s the last thing we need,” said a parishioner named Deborah. “Especially to do it at a church. That’s supposed to be the one place where everyone’s supposed to feel safe.”

The whole thing was caught on video released by the NYPD Saturday.

Danielle said it was a pretty dumb idea.

“You have to be stupid. It’s easier to get a job and earn money the right way,” she said.

Other parishioners said if the burglars were that desperate, they should have just asked the church for help.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577 TIPS.
