LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A pit bull attacked and killed a small dog of an unspecified breed on Long Island Saturday morning.

Long Beach police said the incident happened just after 6 a.m. when the small dog’s owner was walking him down Belmont Avenue. The pit bull, who was accompanying owners on a visit to the area, suddenly jumped a fence and attacked the dog.

A neighbor attempted to stop the attack and threw a blanket on top of the pit bull and tackled the large dog. Though, the small dog had suffered too many injuries by then.

Police said the pit bull did not show any aggression towards humans and when Animal Control arrived at the scene, the animal was docile and even licked the officer.

The pit bull’s owners told police they will be putting the dog down on Monday when they return home.
