Heat Wave: Parts Of Rockaway Beach Reopen

July 01, 2018 - 1:35 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- With the first heat wave of the summer in full swing, New York City is reopening parts of Rockaway Beach.

In late-May, the city’s parks department said that 11 blocks of Rockaway Beach would be closed to preserve sand dunes they built to prevent floods.

Though, now that temperatures have climbed well into the 90s, the area between Beach 91st Street and Beach 102nd Street is once again open for visitors.

A heat warning will remain in effect until Monday, so the city’s Office of Emergency Management is still advising to stay inside air-conditioned buildings.

“Most heat-related deaths occur after exposure to heat in homes,” said Assistant Commissioner for NYC Emergency Management Ben Krakauer. “Be a good neighbor. Knock on your neighbor’s door and make sure that they have everything they need.”

For those that need help, Krakauer advises taking them to a cooling center, which you can find at
