Ozone Park Residents: We Were Misled About Homeless Shelter

July 20, 2018 - 9:27 am

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- There is anger over a planned homeless shelter in Queens.

Ozone Park residents were at a meeting Thursday night to complain -- saying they were told a much-needed shelter for families is planned in a former church parish center, only to find out it's actually going to be a center for mentally ill men.

Joe says the borough doesn't have the space.

"I just think that Queens is overburdened as it is. There are two airports, how many race tracks, how many cemeteries, where you gonna put everything?" he said.

Johnny Collecko wasn't thrilled about the prospect of getting new neighbors.

"For me I have kids, I believe they wanna do a shelter in the community, I don't think that a shelter, homeless shelter should be done in this community or a community like this," he said.

Ozone Park residents are considering suing to stop the shelter.
