Officials consider putting chemical found in spinach on doping ban list

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Popeye might have been on to something with his muscle-boosting spinach.

New research suggests a chemical called ecdysterone, found in the leafy green, acts like steroids.

In fact, athletes in the study who took ecdysterone saw their performance improve three times as much as those who didn't.

The study was partly funded by the world anti-doping agency.

Officials are now considering putting the chemical on their list of banned substances for athletes.
