Report: Obesity Is On The Rise In New York City

July 10, 2018 - 10:53 am

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Another new report says obesity in New York City has been on the rise.

The rate rose from 27 to 32 percent between 2004 and 2014.

The NYU study was in the Journal of Urban Health. It seems men tipped the scale in making the percentage rise.

Obesity rates stayed stable among women, but grew among men.

African Americans had the highest rate of obesity at 37 percent and Asians experienced the greatest increase from 20 to 29 percent.

Researchers say there is an interesting twist that might explain the weight gain. They say they found New Yorkers are eating less meals at home with takeout and restaurant dining increasing from about 2.5 meals per week to almost 4 meals per week over the same time period.
