NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A rookie police officer is being hailed as a hero after he helped save a baby who had stopped breathing.

On Monday night, Rebeca Alarcon said her 20-month-old Leah had suddenly stopped breathing. She explained that she didn’t have time to rush to the hospital and instead sprinted around the corner to the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights.

Osvaldo Nunez, 22, was standing in the door way and immediately sprang into action, taking the infant from her mother.

“She was unconscious, unresponsive, she had no pulse,” Nunez said.

He began chest compressions but remained on the brink. He didn’t give up hope and continued his efforts until finally, Leah opened her eyes.

“It was really a miracle, if it wasn’t for him I don’t know if I’d be holding my daughter right now,” Alarcon said. “I bless him.”

After baby Leah hugged him, Officer Nunez said, “This is why I took the job.”
