NYPD: Man choked, tried to rape unconscious woman in Manhattan

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The NYPD is searching for a man who they say grabbed a woman by the neck and tried to rape her while she was unconscious.

The man attacked the woman in the Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village in lower Manhattan early Saturday morning, according to police.

The woman was attacked near the Stuyvesant Oval, which stands at the center of the housing development, shortly after 5 a.m.

Police said a man grabbed her by the neck, choked her unconscious and then tried to rape her after she fell to the ground.

A bystander witnessed what was happening and came to the woman’s rescue, calling 911 and causing the attacker to flee on foot, police said.

The suspect was last seen running west on 17th Street towards Second Avenue.

The woman taken to an area hospital for evaluation. She suffered cuts to her forehead, neck and elbows.
