NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police say they've charged a Yonkers man a day after viral video shot by subway riders showed a 78-year-old woman repeatedly kicked in the face and body during an attack in the Bronx.

"The subject wanted for the brutal subway attack of an elderly woman IS IN CUSTODY," NYPD Chief Dermot Shea tweeted Saturday. "Thank you to the worldwide community for the tremendous assistance."

Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Marc Gomez of Yonkers. He faces assault and harassment charges.

The victim was riding the northbound 2 train alone, and attempted to defend herself during the attack.

Other riders just filmed and shouted in the background

The attacked occurred around 3 a.m. on March 10, according to police reports.

Authorities say that the suspect got off the train at Nereid Avenue and the victim stayed on the train one more stop to the Wakefield-21 Station where she received medical attention.
